Rooibos Tea Benefits

By

Have you ever heard of this word known as rooibos? To tell you the truth, the country bumpkin frog in the well within me did not really know this word, this I was taking a flight to Africa and the air stewardess was asking if I wanted some rooibos tea. I was like “huh” what kind of tea is that and it was only later that I discovered there was actually this unique tea, which comes from South Africa, known as rooibos tea, and in addition, there were also some health benefits associated with rooibos teas too! In this hub, I will talk more about rooibos tea and also the rooibos tea health benefits that not many people known about. Of course, I would also not forget sharing some of the best and good rooibus teas or rooibus tea bags which can be bought online.

In actual fact, Rooibos means "red bush" in African language. This red bush plant, which is grown in a small area in the Western Cape province in the South African Cedarberg Mountains, is harvested to make rooibos tea which is a herbal tea. This plant is used to make a herbal tea called rooibos tea. In other places it may take on a different name, such as bush tea, redbush tea, South African red tea, red rooibos tea or simply red tea. Needless to say, the rooibos tea is very popular in Southern Africa but is now globally consumed in many countries.

Processing Rooibos Tea

Similar to the processing process for other types of tea, the harvested rooibos leaves are first oxidized, producing the distinctive reddish-brown colour of rooibos. Part of the leaves which are not oxidized are known as the green rooibos is also produced. However, if you really want to drink good green rooibos tea, this is actually more expensive than the traditional rooibos tea. I have also included some green rooibos tea which can be purchased off my hub, in addition to the other rooibos tea bags that you can also buy.

Rooibos Tea Benefits

Now I should talk about the important part which is the rooibos tea benefits. Rooibos tea, similar to other varieties of tea such as green and black tea, has been shown to contain high level of antioxidants such as aspalathin and nothofagin. Anti-oxidants work by reacting with the free radicals produced by aging and thus slows down the aging process in human beings. I am sorry but I am not a scientific person so I do not have any scientific references to prove this.

Rooibos Tea Health Benefits

In addition, rooibos tea is also known to be free of caffeine, and also low in tannin levels compared to fully oxidized black tea or unoxidized green tea leaves. It thus does not have a negative effect on the absorption of iron and proteins into the body. Rooibos tea is completely pure and natural, and contains no additives, preservatives or colorants. It is a good drink for those on a diet. Rooibos has also been reported to assist with nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems and is strongly recommended for people suffering from irritability, headaches, disturbed sleeping patterns, insomnia, nervous tension, mild depression or hypertension.

Rooibos Tea Pregnancy?

Rooibos tea also has anti-spasmodic properties, relieving stomach cramps and colic in infants. Rooibos tea also relieves other stomach and indigestive problems like nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach ulcers and constipation. Mothers can also benefit from drinking Rooibos tea. It is thus good to have rooibos tea for pregnancy. From other reports, I understand that rooibos has been used as a form of traditional medicine in South Africa to alleviate infantile colic, allergies, asthma and dermatological problems.

Buy Rooibos Tea

So I hope you have enjoyed my hub and taken away small morsels of information which may be useful to you. I have also tried included other types of rooibos tea, such as organic rooibos tea, which is rooibos organic tea grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers as well as freshpak rooibos tea which is one of the more popular brands of rooibos tea.

I have read alot of information on Rooibus as I have a particular stomach complaint but I also read that tea in general is not such a good idea. Cammomile is really my only option? Can you convince me otherwise? Would love to hear your comment?

Hi Lesley

To tell you the truth I am not a doctor so what info I get is mainly from my own research and not certified advice. What stomach complaint have u got? There have been reports that both Camomile and Rooibos teas have good effects on the stomach. But it would be good to know what kind of stomach complaints you have and to seek proper treatment then to just drink tea as medicine!

I've really gotten into Rooibos tea. I started drinking it for its health benefits which are many. Rooibos tea is used for its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. Consumption of rooibos tea may relief fever, asthma, insomnia, colic in infants and skin disorders. Rooibos extracts are used in ointments against eczema.

Rooibos tea in fact is not a tea but an herb.

Hi Joanne

Thanks for leaving your comment. I would agree partially with you because a herb can be a tea as well and the way Rooibos is used is through the making of a tea. In this case since it has beneficial properties, it can be said that is it a herbal tea :)

Hello,

about the tea versus herb debate:

I very much agree with the health benefits of Rooibos. But strictly speaking tea only comes from the tea plant. So Rooibos is not a tea but an awesome awesome herbal infusion :)
