Organic Cosmetics

These days, it seems that people have been asking for organic foods instead of normal foods. Organic foods are foods which are made according to certain production standards. For example, when organic crops are grown, the use of non-organic pesticides, insecticides and herbicides is restricted (however it is claimed that certain non-organic fertilizers are still used in certain scenarios). Similar to organic food, organic cosmetics is also manufactured according to certain production standards. Since the word organic is now used to signify something healthy, many people would choose to buy organic cosmetics compared to other normal cosmetics. This hub serves to educate the consumer to be more knowledgeable on organic cosmetics. I would talk about natural cosmetics as most people seem to be confused about these two terms and are unable to differentiate both these terms.

So I guess if you are one of those who keeps up with healthy trends, you would be more interested in buying natural or organic cosmetics. Before I go further, I would like to clarify the differences in meaning between the two. The difference between natural cosmetics and organic cosmetics is not just limited to foundations or facial powders, but also includes a whole range of cosmetics products such as natural lip gloss, lipsticks, facial scrubs and natural eye makeup. Though there are many guidelines to distinguish between natural and organic food products, these same guidelines are usually not applied to makeup or skincare cosmetic products.

As mentioned in brief in my first paragraph, an organic product is a product which has been manufactured, produced or distributed through organic means. These processes are also defined by specific guidelines set by organizations such as the Organic Food Products Act and organic products are not permitted by law to contain any synthetic makeup. Organic products are thus manufactured using substances which are grown without synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organisms. If you are against the testing of cosmetic products on animals, then you should go for organic cosmetics.An organic cosmetic is thus a cosmetic which has been manufactured without the use of synthetic substances.

As for the term natural, it refers to a product which has not been chemically altered from its original state, i.e. the product is in its natural form and no other substances were removed or added. Natural products are derived from natural plants or animal sources but the use of the term is not regulated or certified. A natural cosmetic is thus a cosmetic which has been obtained from its original natural state. Just as the public is consuming more natural or organic food products, they are now hungry for natural and organic cosmetics.

If you are not using certified organic cosmetics, then I would have to tell you that you might be applying harmful substances which are found in normal cosmetics products on your skin. Sad to say, the skin would just absorb these harmful ingredients and it would not be easy to get rid of these chemicals once they are in the body. Hence this is why it is recommended to use organic cosmetic products. Of course if you are using natural cosmetics, you would not be taking in any harmful chemicals, if the cosmetics is truly natural. But how would you know?

There is no sure way to check whether natural cosmetics are truly natural without any harmful ingredients. One good way would be to check the list of ingredients listed on the cosmetic packaging. Natural cosmetics obviously should not contain any man-made or modified ingredients or ingredients modified by chemicals.

However the purpose of cosmetics and makeup is for it to stay on the skin, if the makeup is absorbed by the skin, this means that the makeup will not last long and is undesirable. However, there is no way that we can prevent this, because somehow or another, the ingredients present in the cosmetics which are applied to the skin, would be absorbed by the skin. Hence this is why you should use organics or natural cosmetics, because this would mean that harmful synthetic substances and questionable ingredients would not be absorbed by the skin. So do remember to read the labels of the cosmetic products clearly and be informed. This is similar to reading the labels on food products before you purchase them to check for artificial flavouring or preservatives.

Because of this growing awareness for healthy cosmetics, and as the standard of living and level of affluence rises, demand for natural or organic cosmetics has grown greatly. Consumers are also more choosy and want to best products in terms of quality. There are now more and more such organic and natural products on the market, and you have to be careful of those products which claim to be natural or organic but are actually otherwise. These products are labeled as ‘all natural’ or ‘organic’ but in fact may just be a branding by unscrupulous “organic cosmetic companies”.

If you are trying to choose between organic or natural cosmetics, most people would prefer natural cosmetics since no harmful chemicals were used for its manufacture. But such cosmetics may still have been tested on animals, which some people may not like (this includes some of the popular brands too). Of course, the best cosmetics would be natural organic cosmetics. These cosmetics would have both natural and organic.

In the end, the choice is in the hands of the consumers really. What is most important is that you are being informed of such cosmetics and therefore you can make a right choice. Both organic and natural cosmetics are now easily and widely available. Remember to check out the labels on the cosmetics which will provide important needed to distinguish between natural, organic cosmetic ingredients and synthetic man made ingredients. As you know more, read more and buy more, you would know which products are more suitable for you and which are the ones you should buy.
